We put the Shiseido RevitalEssence Skin Glow Foundation to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.

Foundation is one of the most important parts of my makeup routine. So when Shiseido reached out about its newest product launch, the RevitalEssence Skin Glow Foundation, I was all ears. It's certainly not the brand's first foundation, but it is the most unique. "It's a first for Shiseido, as it is a skincare-active foundation that utilizes the same active level of skincare ingredients as our skincare serums," Shiseido Makeup's global artistic director James Boehmer explains. "You get two products in one: a weightless makeup product that instantly evens skin, blurs pores, and provides an incredible luminous finish and a skincare product that delivers visible results on bare skin."

Two key ingredients power the unique medium-coverage formula. The first is fermented kefir+, a potent prebiotic that helps to maintain a healthy microbiome balance. "It's made from Japanese rice that is fermented and transformed into smaller molecules for easier absorption," he says. The second is niacinamide, one of the B vitamins that helps to retexturize skin and even skin tone. "Together, these two work in synergy to reveal healthy, vibrant skin," Boehmer shares.

The first time I applied the foundation, I immediately noticed how incredibly lightweight the formula felt on my skin. And over the last few weeks, I've continued to test the foundation to see how it works with my skin. Ahead, read my full review of the Shiseido RevitalEssence Skin Glow Foundation.

Shiseido RevitalEssence Skin Glow Foundation

BEST FOR: Dehydrated and combination skin types.

USES: A moisturizer that deeply hydrates skin and primes it for makeup.

HERO INGREDIENTS: Niacinamide and fermented kefir

PRICE: $56

ABOUT THE BRAND: Shiseido is a Japanese beauty brand that has been formulating makeup, skincare, and suncare products for over 150 years.

About My Skin: Seasonally dry

I have combination skin, but for the most part, my skin is pretty well-behaved. However, my skin tends to run dry this time of the year, so using products with targeted, hydrating ingredients is key. That's why this formula piqued my interest. According to Boehmer, the foundation's makeup ingredients are micro-encapsulated in a silicone disc, allowing them to hit your skin after the skincare ingredients. In other words, the skincare active ingredients make contact with your skin first, delivering hydration before the makeup benefits.

How to Apply: You decide

If you're looking for a full-coverage look, this foundation won't get you there—no matter how much you layer. But it is versatile and can be applied in multiple ways to achieve different results, from barely there to a medium build. The easiest way is to apply it with your fingertips in the same way that you would apply a serum or cream to the skin.

"I love to start with the fingertips so that you can feel the product's texture," Boehmer notes. "[This method] creates a bit more of a sheer or light coverage look." If you're like me and want a little more coverage, you can build the foundation by applying it with a brush. I'll dab a bit on the back of my hand, then blend it out. I'll typically apply two layers for maximum coverage. If you prefer to use a makeup sponge, that works, too.

"This foundation can meet a lot of different needs," Boehmer says. It works for the minimalist who wants an easy multitasking product but also for someone with a more committed and elaborate skincare and makeup routine."

The Results: Bouncy, hydrated skin

Once the product dries down, the result is a subtle dewy glow. Not only did my skin look more hydrated, it felt bouncier to the touch. Personally, I like to use this foundation in place of a CC creamfor light coverage at the gym. However, I was also able to build a full makeup look over it without looking too "done." Either way, the product wore well without creasing throughout the day.

The Value: A luxury buy

Coming in at $56 for one fluid ounce, this skincare-charged foundation is a prestige-level purchase. The silver lining is that a little goes a long way, and within a month, I'm only about halfway through the bottle. Plus, the price tag is justifiable due to the high-performance ingredients infused in the formula. You're paying for skincare and makeup benefits in one.

Similar Products: You’ve got options

Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation: This under $50 cult favorite skin tint does not disappoint. Like this latest iteration from Shiseido, the Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation ($48) will leave you with a light, dewy coverage. Furthermore, it also contains potent levels of skincare ingredients. It lists niacinamide as a key ingredient, plus hyaluronic acid and squalene oil for supercharged hydration.

Ciele Tint & Protect SPF 50+ Tinted Serum Foundation: This brand-new product comes courtesy of celebrity makeup artist Nikki DeRoest’s new makeup line, Ciele. The similarly weightless Tint & Protect SPF 50+ Tinted Serum Foundation ($44) blends into a seamless second skin but offers a bit more coverage than the others. The ingredient list is focused on calming ingredients like allantoin, bisabolol, and niacinamide.

Final Verdict

There's so much to love about this feather-light foundation. The formula is supercharged with potent skincare ingredients (and SPF!). Plus, it leaves your skin with a more even, smoother, dewy, and radiant appearance. It's definitely not your full-coverage product, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a formula that ticks as many boxes as this one.
