If you're anything like me, you remember the first time you wore mascara. After the first rake through my lashes, I fell in love with how mascara made my lashes pop, and I've been a believer ever since. While L'oréal Voluminous Mascara has been my go-to for a decade, I'm always open to trying new formulas. In the name of steering away from tradition for a little, I wanted to test the TikTok-viral Neogen Dermalogy Volume Curl Metal Mascara. The hashtag "metal mascara" has been viewed over 16 million times on TikTok, so clearly, it's worth a try. Ahead, read my honest review of the buzzy brush-free mascara.

Neogen Extra Volume Curl Metal Mascara

Best for: All lashes

Uses: Adding volume, curl, and length to your lashes

Active ingredients: Oligogeline, bioextender SPE, and whitekera

Cruelty-Free?: Yes

Price: $38

About the brand: Based in California, Neogen creates high-performance beauty and skincare products using biotechnology.

About My Eyes: Shorter length with a slight curl

When applying mascara, my goal is always length and volume. Since my natural lashes are not very dense, a coating or two of quality mascara usually does the trick. Since they have a slight curl, I don’t use lash curlers. For my lashes, having too much of a curl makes them appear less lengthy.

The Packaging: Sleek and innovative

Apart from the formula, this mascara's packaging deserves a conversation of its own. Having a metal wand instead of the traditional spoolie brush is an innovative take. The gold metal brush bristle is slender, allowing for precise application. And since the wand isn't made with fibers, it can easily be washed with water, allowing for the most sanitary application each time. Overmascara'smascara's design made me even more excited to try it.

How to Apply: Start at the base

Mascara application with a traditional wand is quite simple. Fortunately, the same applies for the metal mascara. According to the brand, you should start at the base of your lashes and glide the wand to the ends of your lashes. This helps to make sure each eyelash has been coated. The size of the metal brush makes it suitable for coating your bottom lashes as well.

The Results: Elongated, bold lashes

After gliding one coat of mascara onto my eyelashes, I was immediately pleased with how it made them look. As I've mentioned, my eyelashes don't have much natural volume, but with this mascara, I noticed they were more voluminous. I was worried that the wand would make application a little complicated—since there are no bristles that could brush through my lashes—but it actually made application easier. I didn't have to worry about clumping, as the brush doesn't hold an excess amount of mascara.

I wore the mascara all day and didn't see any smudging or flaking. However, the one downside of the long-lasting wear is the difficulty of removing the mascara. I typically use Bubble's Wipe Out Makeup Remover for makeup removal, but it didn't get all the product off of my lashes.

The Value: Worth the price

A $38 mascara is definitely not the most budget-friendly beauty purchase, but I can tell you it is 100% worth the price. To start, the metal wand is incredibly unique and creates a seamless application process. Plus, you get .13 fluid ounces of product, so it should last a while. Another plus? Once you run out, you can keep your wand and purchase a refill bottle for $28.

IT Cosmetics Tightline 3-in-1 Black Lash Primer-Eyeliner-Lengthening Mascara: There aren't many metal mascaras on the market, but as far as spoolie sizing, IT Cosmetics' Tightline 3-in-1 Black Lash Primer-Eyeliner-Lengthening Mascara ($27) is similar. The brand's three-in-one mascara promises to help prime your lashes, provide tight-line eyeliner definition, and enhance your lashes.

L'Oreal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara: If you're looking for dramatically lengthened lashes, the L'Oreal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara ($11) is worth a try. It's made with a slender, precise brush with two sides—the flat side helps enhance lash length, while the comb side separates lashes.

Final Verdict

Neogen Dermalogy Extra Volume Curl Metal Mascara is like a magic wand for your eyelashes. The metal wand offers such a unique yet seamless application process. One brush through your lashes delivers noticeable results, giving them a lifted and voluminous look.
